About the PageantThe Miss University of Georgia Scholarship Pageant, created in 1961, is sponsored annually by the Student Government Association. It is a preliminary pageant for the Miss America Pageant Organization. The Miss America Organization is a not-for-profit corporation established solely to provide contestants with the opportunity to enhance their professional and educational goals, and to achieve those pursuits with the assistance of monetary grants and awards. The nonprofit civic corporation was established in 1921. In 2011 at the local, state and national Miss America competitions more than $45 million in cash and tuition-based scholarships were made available. The scholarship fund is based on a rich scholastic tradition that has been the cornerstone of the Miss America program since 1945. The winner of the Miss University of Georgia Pageant will receive a scholarship and will represent the University at various programs and events throughout the year as well as promote her platform issue. She will also compete in the Miss Georgia Pageant in June in Columbus, Georgia. Scholarships are also awarded to the top four runners up as well as the “People’s Choice” winner and the Floreida Harrell Congeniality Award.
